“Qu’est ce que c’est, Phillipe?”

15Mar07

The annual TED conference just happened and I’m looking forward to their great videos. One quote from this year’s conference which stood out to me was from Phillipe Stark of all people. When discussing why he designs he stated,

“We are all obliged to participate in the development of our species”

I thought this was a very interesting way of looking at design in today’s environment. When I was recently asked why I design stuff in a world filled with stuff I tried to articulate a similar thought. For me designing things has value in our society because we need them and the best I can do is design responsibly to insure that my design is creating value. As Stark stated, objects are a part of the development process for our civilization. As designers we are compelled to be involved in this process along the way.
